We also looked at the Prius and the Honda Fit. All got great reviews as economical cars. The Fit is nearly identical to our Scion, though it has a little more room. Think it's also a bit more expensive, and not as good looking (imho). The Prius is great, but since we drive so little the fuel economy advantages didn't offset the price jump.
